Why You Need Backlinks
Tracking information such as, who has linked to your posts and is posting about your site will help you measure your success and your network with others. This is how the Blogger feature Backlinks works. It tracks the links made to posts automatically when it is turned ON, similar to the Trackbacks feature found in most blogging software. Let's compare Backlinks, Trackbacks, and Pingbacks:
How it works
Backlinks
Protocol scans and sends information back to your blog when another person links to your post or blog, no matter what tracking tool they have set up. A summary of the information can be seen by your readers when the Backlinks feature is set to "Show" in your settings.
Pingbacks
When a blogger links to your post, a signal is sent back to your blogging software. Your site code sends a return signal to verify whether the other site exists. The physical link is confirmed as live and valid. A physical link must exist.
Trackbacks
Linking to your post, a blogger's site sends a signal back to your blog with basic information about their referring post. Readers can then follow the new connection made between your blogs. Does not require a physical link between the sites.
Advantage
Backlinks
Sends site name, URL, snippet of Backlink post, author, and date.
Pingbacks
Less prone to spamattacks due to signal check.
Trackbacks
Sends site name,URL, and post information. Most popular link back method.
Disadvantage
Backlinks
Person linking to your blog must use a Trackback or Backlink feature. You may have to submit your own trackbacks manually or by using a third party tool.
Pingbacks
Sends only URLs of sites which are pinging and being pinged. A person linking to your blog must use a Pingback feature.
Trackbacks
A person linking to your blog must use a trackback feature or similar script.
